What are alcohol swabs for?

Alcohol swabs are commonly used in infection control to prepare the skin for injections and prevent infections. Sterile alcohol prep pads may also be used to prepare an injection site. By preparing an injection site, any bacteria or debris on the skin is removed, allowing the needle to puncture the skin cleanly.

Best practices for preparing an injection site include hand washing, putting on nitrile gloves, and swabbing the patient's skin for final preparation. Washing your hands or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer like Purell may be needed before, between, and after injections, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

The WHO recommends the following steps for preparing an injection site.

Apply a 60–70% alcohol-based solution (isopropyl alcohol or ethanol) on a single-use swab or cotton-wool ball. DO NOT use methanol or methyl-alcohol as these are not safe for human use.
Wipe the area from the center of the injection site working outwards without going over the same area.
Apply the solution for 30 seconds, then allow it to dry completely.
Dispose of needles in a designated sharps container.

What type of alcohol is used in swabs?

Alcohol wipes and swabs in infection control use either isopropyl or ethanol-based alcohol. Methanol or methyl-alcohol are not safe for human use and will damage your patient's skin. The WHO recommends using solutions between 60-70% alcohol. There is an ongoing debate about whether it is necessary to prepare injection sites. It is common to use alcohol prep pads before vaccine administration in the United States.
